Sparking the Magic

Writer's picture: Morgan GrantMorgan Grant

One of my biggest fears of parenthood: projecting my own wants and loves (obsessions even) on to my kids in a way that they fear that they may disappointment me.

Growing up we were very fortunate and went to Disney often and from a young age. We would visit about every 3 to 4 years, doing different experiences, staying in different resorts, eating different places and you get the idea. By the time I was in my late childhood I was basically a Disney pro and that is probably when the Disney love bug bit me hard and my love affair for the most magical place on Earth was solidified. And we lived Happily Ever After.

So, when do you start taking your kids to Disney?

One of the most debated topics is see in the Facebook Moms Group (que the popcorn).

Answer: whatever is right for you is right for them.

The end.

Now that doesn't mean they will remember, there won't be any "Mickey meltdowns", spilt popcorn, long lines, heat, humidity, lack of sleep, tired feet and SO many other child sized world ending problems. Let me tell you you, I've been so many times that I've lost count and something ALWAYS goes wrong, with or with out kids.

We took our daughter Peyton to meet the mouse shortly after her first birthday and our trip was perfect in its own way. She cried, I cried, happy tears, sad tears and most certainly tired tears but we made it out alive, we lived and we learned. And thats exactly what we have done every.single.trip. But the most important lesson, we didn't do it for her (of course we wanted her to enjoy herself and all Disney has to offer) but we did it for us as parents. We did it for our own memories, our own pictures, for the happy place in our hearts.

There truly is no right or wrong age, there really is something for everyone! The enjoyment of certain rides, attractions , restaurants, resorts may change with age but that goes with most things in life.

Our daughter is now 2 and 1/2 and has been numerous times. Not only because we as parents love to go but because SHE loves to go!

Each trip we learn a little more about her, see a little more magic in her eyes, and watch her love for Disney grow. And let me tell you there is nothing that can compare to the bright eyes and excitement that comes over her when we walk right down the middle of Main Street U.S.A.

I never want my kids to feel like they have to love Disney, I want them to find what sparks the magic in them even if it isn't the most magical place on Earth, lands of fantasy, or Mickey shaped food.
